John Clowes
Garden Design
I offer various services to suit your particular needs, whether it is advice on a problem area of the garden or a scheme for a full design and construction.
References to previous clients can be provided and you are welcome to see the work I have carried out in my own garden.
These involve a visit to your garden and a discussion about your design and planting problems. I will bring photos and plant lists and by the end of the 3 to 4 hours you will have sketches and notes to use in solving your gardening problem.
Often the garden needs to be entirely re-planned, in which case, after an initial visit I will give you a quotation for an outline plan. This will be a scale drawing showing paving, lawns, water features, pergolas etc. and planting borders. It will not show the specific plants which would appear on the planting plan if required. We will discuss the plan and refine it so that it satisfies all you requirements. On completion it will be suitable as a working drawing for a contractor or yourself to carry out the work and create the garden.
These can be provided as a second phase once the outline plan is completed or as a separate requirement for an existing border. Planting plans will define exact positions and numbers of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants along with a full plant list for ordering from a nursery.
If required I will liaise with contractors with whose work I am familiar to organise a quotation for the construction work as shown on the plan.
When the work starts I will visit the at no extra cost (as part of the outline plan fee) and work with the contractor to confirm their interpretation of the plan. If you require regular monitoring throughout the project this can be arranged for an additional fee.
You may want to order all the plants for your new garden yourself. However, if you prefer I can order the plants to be delivered to you and arrange the planting if you don't want to do it yourself. In either case I will check the plants when they arrive for quality and correct species and will position them on the ground in preparation for planting
A small charge is made for the first visit to view the garden and discuss with you possible design solutions. At this visit I will provide a quotation for the next phase of work should you wish to go ahead
These are charged at an hourly rate with a small charge for travelling.
... are based on the area of the site and additional factors such as the need for a detailed survey or complexity of the site. A small courtyard garden may cost £500, whereas a large complex design could be over £1000. The cost covers supplying a hand drawn scale plan plan, sketches of the completed garden and, if required, obtaining a quotation for the construction work.
... are charged based on the areas of borders involved and, for the whole garden a guide price would be about the same as for the outline plan. For this you would get a scale plan of the borders with all the individual plants marked and named and a master list which can be used to order the plants from a nursery.
